讲座内容:

The contemporary Australian political scene is a complex one. Most obvious is a rapid change of political leaders – 5 Prime Ministers in 5 years! – within the context of a relatively stable parliamentary and party system. We also see substantial concern about government debt, at the same time as increasing demands for government expenditure in education, health and other social services. Australia is also an extraordinarily diverse society – ‘multicultural’ - because of rapid immigration, with one in four Australians being born overseas, yet a society and political system that is remarkably low in ethnic and religious tensions, and with a political and legal system based on the British model to which all Australians are basically committed. And while party allegiances are weaker among voters, and the role of independents in Parliament has become stronger, Australia is still basically a ‘two-party system’. This presentation will examine the institutional structures and current issues that characterise this contemporary Australian political scene.
